How does one apply for the middle class scholarship? It’s all over the ucsd parent facebook group; also how does this affect parent plus loans taken out? Is the award amount refunded? Thanks in advance!!
To apply for the Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) at UC San Diego, students must complete either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA). There is no separate application for the MCS; submitting either form automatically qualifies you for consideration.
Key Dates
The priority deadline for the 2025–26 academic year is April 2, 2025. Students are encouraged to create a WebGrants 4 Students account to monitor their award status.
Impact on Parent PLUS Loans
Receiving the MCS may affect Parent PLUS Loans in the following ways:
- The MCS is considered gift aid, which reduces the overall cost of attendance.
- Total financial aid cannot exceed the school's cost of attendance, potentially limiting the amount parents can borrow through Parent PLUS Loans.
- If the MCS creates a credit balance after disbursement, parents can use the refunded amount to pay down the loan principal, thus saving on interest.
If the total financial aid, including the MCS, exceeds mandatory fees, the remaining balance will be refunded to the student. Refunds are processed via direct deposit or paper check through Student Financial Solutions. Note that award amounts may be adjusted if enrollment status changes or if additional scholarships are received.
