Anyone know how many classes they allow a student to fail? My son had a rough start to his first year, and we just want to make sure he'll be okay. Can he retake courses? Also does it vary between major and non-major courses?
Students at UC San Diego (UCSD) are evaluated based on their Grade Point Average (GPA) and unit progress rather than a fixed number of failed classes. To remain in good academic standing, students must maintain a term and cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.
Academic Standing
- Good Standing: GPA of 2.0 or higher.
- Academic Notice: GPA between 1.5 and 2.0.
- Disqualification: GPA below 1.5 or remaining on Academic Notice for two consecutive terms.
- Minimum Progress: Complete at least 36 units per academic year.
Students can retake courses in which they received a grade of D, F, or NP (Not Pass). Key points include:
- The new grade replaces the old grade in GPA calculations for the first 16 units of repeated coursework.
- After 16 units, both grades are averaged into the GPA.
- A course can typically be repeated only once; a third attempt requires permission from the College Dean.
- Many majors require a minimum grade of C- for core courses, while a D may be considered passing for the university.
- Students must successfully repeat failed prerequisite courses before advancing to subsequent levels.
