My student is a first-year commuter and needs a few letters of recommendation, but it’s only their second quarter and they haven’t been able to build strong relationships with professors yet. Who should they ask, and how should they bring it up? They’re considering a professor from last quarter who they emailed and visited during office hours a few times, but aren’t sure if its a good idea yet
Building relationships with professors can be challenging for first-year commuter students, but it is entirely acceptable to request letters of recommendation early in your academic career.
Who to Ask
- Recent Professors: The professor from last quarter is a good choice, especially since your student emailed and visited during office hours. This familiarity can help jog the professor's memory.
- Teaching Assistants: If they had a strong relationship with a TA, they could ask the TA to write a letter co-signed by the professor.
- Non-Academic References: Consider asking an employer or club advisor who can speak to their work ethic.
- Initial Email Request: Use a formal subject line like "Letter of Recommendation Request - [Your Name]". Remind the professor of the course, grade, and specific contributions.
- Brag Sheet: Provide a folder with a resume, unofficial transcript, statement of purpose, and work samples to assist the professor in writing a detailed letter.
- Timing: Allow at least 3-4 weeks for the professor to write the letter, providing clear submission instructions and deadlines.
