In ucsd parent group: any information on how current freshman apply for housing on campus next year? Do they stay in the same college? Same dorm? Mine is in Muir but was housed in Sixth College Tapestry overflow….not sure how that works? Do they get to apply for a suite with a group of friends? Do they get a choice of dorms vs apartment style housing?

Current freshmen at UC San Diego (UCSD) will apply for housing for the 2026–2027 academic year through the Room Selection process, which takes place via the UCSD Housing Portal. The application window typically opens in late February, and students must ensure they meet all deadlines to maintain their housing guarantee.

College and Room Assignments Most sophomores, including those from Muir College, are likely to remain within their designated college for housing. However, they may have the opportunity to select from various available spaces within their college community, including options in Upper Division housing neighborhoods like Pepper Canyon East and The Rita.

Applying with Friends Students can form roommate groups to apply for suites or apartments together. During the application process, they will receive a Roommate Group PIN, allowing them to select a specific suite or apartment during their assigned lottery time, provided all members are eligible for the same selection community.

Housing Options Students can choose between dorm-style residence halls, which typically have shared bathrooms and no kitchens, and apartment-style housing, which includes full kitchens and living areas. Most continuing students, including sophomores, are housed in apartments, while first-year students primarily reside in dorms. Dining plans are generally required for both types of housing, although some Upper Division options may allow for opting out of a dining plan.
