My biology kid wants to start research in Winter Quarter. Is that realistic or do labs mostly onboard in fall, or is it prof by prof?
While many formal research programs at UCSD begin in the Fall, there are ample opportunities for students to engage in research during the Winter Quarter.
Research Opportunities
- Quarterly Applications: Many research courses, such as BISP 199 (Individual Research), require applications every quarter, allowing students to start research in Winter.
- Continuous Lab Openings: Labs often have mid-year openings as students graduate or shift projects, making it feasible to join a lab during Winter.
Students can explore various avenues to secure a research position:
- REAL Portal: The Research Experience & Applied Learning (REAL) Portal provides a centralized database for research opportunities, including paid and volunteer positions.
- Direct Outreach: Students should identify labs of interest and reach out directly via email, expressing their interest in ongoing projects.
- Undergraduate Research Hub (URH): Programs like TRELS offer funding and mentorship for research during the academic year.
- Academic Credit Courses: Enrolling in courses like BISP 199 allows students to earn credit for their research efforts.
For Winter 2026, applications for BISP 199 are recommended to be submitted by December 5, 2025, with full approval required by the end of Week 2 of the quarter for research for credit Source 1.
