So my son broke his right hand and he is a computer science major :/ who has a rigourus course load this quarter. We think we may have him take the quarter off becuase his professors are not really accomodating his injury. What is the process for this and is this a good idea???
Given your son's situation as a Computer Science major with a hand injury, taking a quarter off could be beneficial due to the rigorous demands of his coursework.
Process for Taking Time Off
If your son decides to withdraw:
- Before the Quarter Starts: If he hasn't paid fees, he can declare non-attendance via MyUCLA. If fees are paid but classes haven't started, he must submit a Cancellation of Registration form to the Registrar’s Office for a full refund.
- During the Quarter: If classes have begun, he needs to file a Withdrawal Notice and include a doctor’s statement regarding his injury. This is crucial for any refund exceptions or if he withdraws after the Week 9 deadline.
- Typing Requirements: Most CS courses require extensive coding, which may be impossible with a hand injury.
- Academic Risk: Attempting to continue may lead to poor grades due to strict late policies.
- Accessibility Options: Before making a final decision, consult the UCLA Center for Accessible Education for possible accommodations that could allow him to continue his studies without exacerbating his injury.
- Sequential Curriculum: Missing a quarter may delay graduation; consult an Engineering Undergraduate Counselor to assess the impact on his degree progress.
