What can people tell me about CAPS, what can they offer for students? Is it like therapy? and is it covered by ucship?
UCLA's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides essential mental health support tailored for registered students, focusing on immediate concerns through a short-term care model.
Services Offered
CAPS offers a range of services, including:
- Individual Therapy: Short-term psychotherapy with licensed clinicians.
- Group Therapy: Support and wellness skills groups.
- Psychiatry: Evaluation and medication management.
- Crisis Support: 24/7 immediate crisis counseling.
- Assessments: Triage assessments and ADHD evaluations.
- Care Coordination: Referrals for long-term care.
While CAPS provides therapeutic services, it is primarily designed for short-term interventions, addressing issues like academic stress and situational anxiety. Students with UC SHIP can access up to eight sessions, while those without may receive four sessions. For ongoing needs, CAPS facilitates referrals to external providers.
Coverage by UC SHIP
Students enrolled in UC SHIP can access CAPS services without additional fees, while non-SHIP students incur a $30 fee per session. For off-campus care under UC SHIP, a referral from CAPS is necessary for coverage.
