My son is an economics major, can he do an internship for credit? Have other poeple done this?
UCLA offers opportunities for economics majors to earn academic credit through internships, which is a common path taken by students in the program.
Internship Credit Options Students can earn credit through two primary courses:
- Economics 195A or 195B:
- Econ 195A is a 2-unit, Pass/No Pass course, while Econ 195B may offer 4 units.
- These units do not count towards major requirements but contribute to overall graduation units.
- Eligibility requires students to be declared majors with junior or senior standing and completion of prerequisite courses.
- Center for Community Engagement Course (195CE):
- This option allows students to earn 4 units of upper-division credit, which may sometimes count towards major or minor requirements.
- Similar eligibility and coursework requirements apply, focusing on real-world application of academic knowledge.
- Secure an Internship: Use UCLA's Handshake portal or attend career fairs.
- Confirm Eligibility: Ensure they meet course requirements.
- Submit Paperwork: Provide necessary documentation to the Economics Undergraduate Advising Office.
- Enroll in the Course: After approval, students enroll in the appropriate course.
- Complete Course Requirements: Manage internship duties alongside academic assignments, including a final project and bi-weekly meetings with an instructor.
