My son is planning to study abroad in the Spring. How do we ensure the courses transfer correctly toward UCLA degree requirements, how does financial aid apply, and are there any hard deadlines that can’t be appealed?
To facilitate your son's study abroad experience in the Spring, it is essential to understand the course transfer process, financial aid applicability, and important deadlines.
Course Transfer All units from the University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) are guaranteed to transfer as unit credit to UCLA. However, for non-UC programs, courses must be academic and similar to UC offerings. To ensure specific degree requirements are met, he should:
- File a Transfer Course Credit Petition with his department.
- Submit an Advisory Petition for provisional approval of course equivalencies before departure.
- Ensure the host institution sends an official transcript to UCLA after the program ends.
- Complete the 2025-2026 FAFSA or California Dream Act Application (CADAA).
- Submit a signed Financial Aid Agreement for Travel Study or Global Internships via the UCLA IEO Portal.
- Be aware that starting in 2025, all financial aid will be managed through the Bruin Financial Aid Portal.
- April 2, 2025: Priority filing deadline for FAFSA/CADAA.
- May 2, 2025: Extended deadline for UCEAP financial aid applications.
- March 11, 2026: Final deadline for Travel Study program cancellations, after which no refunds are available. Appeals for late submissions are limited and require documented extenuating circumstances.
