Can a student appeal a resident advisor position denial?
Students who are denied a Resident Advisor (RA) position at UCLA do not have a guaranteed formal appeal process; however, they can take proactive steps to address their situation.
Contact the Recruitment Team Immediately reach out to the RA Recruitment Team via email at RARecruitment@orl.ucla.edu for any inquiries regarding your application status or to seek clarification on the decision.
Request Specific Feedback In your communication, professionally request feedback on your application or interview. Understanding perceived weaknesses can help identify if there were any factual errors or if you have new qualifications that warrant reconsideration.
Inquire About the Alternate Pool If you were placed on an alternate list, you remain eligible for future openings. If you were outright denied, ask if there is a possibility to be considered for the alternate pool based on new experiences or qualifications.
Submit New Information If your denial was based on unmet requirements that you have since fulfilled (e.g., improved GPA), provide this documentation in your correspondence.
Critical Considerations
- There is no automatic right to appeal, and hiring decisions are at the department's discretion.
- If you suspect a procedural error occurred, clearly state this in your communication.
- Ensure you secure alternative housing options by the April 15th deadline, regardless of your application status.
