My student is a second-year at UCLA interested in behavioral neuroscience and plans to pursue a PhD. They applied to URFP and were not selected, but still want a similar structured research experience. They currently have two quarters of lab experience (three after this winter) and are an international student on an F-1 visa. What UCLA programs or pathways would you recommend they pursue?
As a second-year international student at UCLA interested in behavioral neuroscience, your student has several structured research opportunities available despite not being selected for URFP.
Structured Research Programs
- UCLA Neuroscience Scholars Program (NeuroScholars): This is a 10-week intensive summer research training program designed for exceptional sophomores and juniors committed to pursuing a neuroscience Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. International students are eligible to apply (NeuroScholars).
- URC-Sciences Summer Program: Another 10-week summer opportunity for UCLA undergraduates to conduct research with a faculty mentor and participate in professional development workshops. International students can apply (URC-Sciences).
- Psychology Research Opportunities Programs (PROPS): This two-quarter program allows students to work as research assistants in psychology labs for course credit or a stipend (PROPS).
In addition to formal programs, your student should actively seek a research assistant position by:
- Identifying faculty members in the Neuroscience Interdepartmental Program and Psychology Department whose work aligns with their interests.
- Contacting these faculty directly with a personalized email, including their resume and unofficial transcript, to express interest in volunteer or SRP-99 positions.
- Enrolling in SRP 99 once a faculty mentor agrees to take them into their lab, allowing them to gain course credit for their research experience.
