How does independent research work for econ? Can it be a substitute for an actual course?
Independent research in economics at UCLA primarily operates through contract courses, enabling students to earn academic credit while collaborating with faculty members.
Types of Independent Research
- Lower-Division (SRP 99): Designed for entry-level research, students receive 1–2 units of P/NP credit for 3–10 hours of work weekly.
- Upper-Division (Econ 199/198): Available for juniors and seniors, these courses require a 12–20 hour weekly commitment and culminate in a final paper or project, offering 3–4 units of credit.
- Departmental Honors (Econ 198A/198B): This two-quarter sequence is for students with a GPA of at least 3.5, involving the writing of a 30–40 page thesis under faculty mentorship.
Independent research can fulfill elective requirements within the Economics major:
- Completing the Econ 198A/198B sequence counts as two upper-division electives.
- However, it cannot replace core courses like Econ 101, 102, or 103. Additionally, completing Econ 199A may affect eligibility for the Departmental Honors program.
To begin, students must:
- Secure a faculty mentor willing to supervise their project.
- Create a contract via MyUCLA and submit it for approval by the end of Week 2 of the quarter.
