Did RA selections take into account financial aid?? Because our rising junior wasn't selected even though they have a super strong resume. Kinda irked about it
The RA selection process at UCLA is designed to be need-blind, meaning that a candidate's financial aid status should not influence their selection. However, it is important to note that the compensation for RAs, which includes free housing and a meal plan, is classified as a scholarship. This classification can potentially reduce other need-based financial aid, such as grants or work-study allocations.
Selection Criteria
The selection process is highly competitive and focuses on qualitative traits beyond just a strong resume. Key factors include:
- Strong community-building and leadership abilities
- Commitment to diversity and inclusion
- Ability to manage student conduct and work collaboratively
Even with a strong resume, candidates may not be selected due to:
- The need for specific interpersonal skills assessed during interviews
- Prioritization based on housing eligibility or community needs
- Conduct record reviews that may disqualify candidates with past violations
