My son wants to know the difference between Scand 50 and Scand 50W? Is the latter just more writing-focused? Also is it recommended to takie it over the summer? Thx
Both Scand 50 and Scand 50W provide an overview of Scandinavian literature and culture, but they differ significantly in their focus and requirements.
Course Differences
- Scand 50:
- Does not fulfill the Writing II requirement.
- Involves quizzes and a final exam with less emphasis on formal essays.
- Generally has a lighter workload.
- Scand 50W:
- Fulfills the UCLA Writing II requirement, making it more intensive in writing.
- Requires significant formal and informal writing assignments, including two major essays and discussion posts.
- Demands higher engagement and rigorous grading, focusing on developing strong literary analysis skills.
Taking Scand 50W during the summer is often recommended because:
- It efficiently satisfies the Writing II requirement in a condensed timeframe.
- Many students find the course enjoyable and manageable, especially with a good instructor.
- The focused nature of summer sessions can enhance engagement with the material, which includes interesting stories and folklore.
