Are uc unions going on strike?
As of late November 2025, the situation regarding strikes among UC unions is mixed. While the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) and the California Nurses Association (CNA) have reached tentative agreements and canceled their planned strikes, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 3299 proceeded with a strike on November 17 and 18, 2025.
Union Agreements
- UPTE: This union, representing 21,000 healthcare, research, and technical professionals, reached a tentative agreement with the UC system, which includes significant pay increases and protected healthcare benefits. Their planned strike was called off as members voted on the ratification of this new contract.
- CNA: Similarly, the CNA also reached a tentative four-year contract agreement, leading to the cancellation of their planned sympathy strike.
- The AFSCME Local 3299 union, representing about 40,000 service and patient care workers, held a two-day strike across all UC campuses, including UCLA, due to ongoing contract disputes regarding wages and housing protections. This strike occurred as they had been working without a contract for an extended period.
