We have a sophomore that lives on campus and are local to DFW. They will most likely travel home, wondering how the campus prepares though. If they lose power, do they have warming centers like a main building? Do you think classes will cancel Monday given it won't go above freezing until then? Any inside info?
As a sophomore living on campus in the DFW area, it's important to know how SMU prepares for winter weather and power outages.
Warming Centers In the event of power outages or extreme cold, SMU has designated warming centers, including Fondren Library and the Hughes-Trigg Student Center, where students can stay warm and charge their devices. On-campus residents are advised to maintain indoor temperatures at 65°F and let faucets drip to prevent frozen pipes. For emergency maintenance issues, students can contact SMU Facilities at 214-768-7000.
Class Cancellations Currently, SMU has no plans to cancel classes due to the winter weather, but officials are closely monitoring the situation. A decision regarding Monday's classes will be made by 6 a.m. on that day, and if classes are canceled, they will not automatically shift to virtual learning. Instead, missed hours will be made up later through asynchronous instruction Source.
