I heard SMU students can get charged for a parking permit unless they opt out even if they don’t bring a car. Is that real, and where exactly does the student opt out
At Southern Methodist University (SMU), students residing in on-campus housing, including residence halls and sorority/fraternity houses, may incur an annual parking fee regardless of vehicle ownership. If students do not wish to be charged for a parking permit, they must actively opt out by the designated deadline.
Opting Out Process Students can opt out of the parking permit fee through the SMU Parking Portal. The process must be completed each academic year before the semester's "Drop/Add Date." Here are the steps:
- Log In: Access your "My Parking Account" using your SMU ID and password.
- Start Order: Select "Order Permit" as if purchasing one.
- Select Option: Choose the "Opt-out of permit" option at the bottom of the permit selection screen.
- Confirm: Agree to the university's parking rules and complete the process.
- Receipt: Save or print the "Order Receipt" as confirmation of your opt-out.
- Students taking more than 9 credit hours: $380
- Students taking 9 or fewer credit hours: $210
