If a required STEM class is full, does SMU ever open more seats or add sections in week 1, or should my son pick a backup immediately? Thx y'all
At Southern Methodist University (SMU), once enrollment begins, it is uncommon for the university to open additional seats or create new sections for full classes, including required STEM courses. However, students often drop or swap classes during the first week, which can lead to openings.
Enrollment Strategy
To ensure that your son maintains a full schedule (at least 12 credit hours for full-time status), he should:
- Pick a Backup Course: Enroll in an alternative class right away to secure his schedule.
- Utilize the SWAP Function: This feature in my.SMU allows him to remain in the backup class while automatically dropping it if a seat becomes available in his preferred STEM class.
- Join the Waitlist: If the STEM class has a waitlist, he can add himself through the fourth day of classes. The waitlist is processed every business day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Avoid Instructor Petitions: SMU discourages contacting instructors for permission to enroll in full classes; students should rely on the official waitlist system instead.
For more information on waitlist procedures and academic advising, you can refer to the SMU Waitlist Guidelines.
