Are summer courses shorter than academic year? And are only select courses offered? Also are there different summer sessions courses?
Summer courses at Southern Methodist University (SMU) are indeed shorter and more intensive compared to the standard academic year. While the fall and spring semesters typically span about 15 weeks, summer courses are condensed into sessions lasting between 11 and 22 class days.
Summer Session Types
SMU offers various summer sessions, including:
- May Term: An 11-day session immediately following the spring semester (May 18 – June 2).
- June (Summer 1) & July (Summer 2): Each lasting approximately one month (22 class days).
- Sessions A & B: Shorter 11-day sub-sessions within June and July.
- Combined/Full Session: A longer 10-week session running from June 3 to August 4.
- SMU-in-Taos: Offers May, June, and July sessions focused on experiential learning.
Not all courses from the regular academic year are available during the summer. Typically, over 200 courses are offered during the June-July period, while the May Term features around 70 courses. Additionally, a limited number of courses are available online during the summer Source 1.
