My student hates emailing professors. What’s the ‘right’ way to ask about getting into a full class
Emailing a professor about enrolling in a full class can be daunting, but following a structured approach can ease the process.
Email Structure Your student should use their official osu.edu email and ensure the email is professional and concise. The email should include:
- Subject Line: Clearly state the course details (e.g., "Permission to Enroll - CHEM 1210 Section 0010").
- Greeting: Use a formal salutation such as "Dear Professor [Last Name]".
- Introduction: Briefly introduce themselves, including their full name, major, and interest in the course.
- The Request: Clearly mention that the class is full and request permission to enroll, noting if it is a graduation requirement.
- Call to Action: Indicate their intention to attend the first class meeting, as this may influence the professor's decision.
- Download and complete the Course Enrollment Permission Form from the OSU Registrar’s website.
- Obtain the professor's signature on the form or save their email approval as a PDF.
- Submit the form or email approval to their college office to finalize enrollment, as they cannot add themselves via Buckeye Link if the class is full.
- Be mindful of deadlines, particularly the second Friday after classes start, which is the final date for adding classes with permission.
