My student ordered something for her dorm room, but it arrived already opened and the front desk said someone had checked the contents of the package. We’ve never heard of that happening before. Is dorm/front desk staff allowed to open or inspect student packages, and has anyone else experienced this? This totally evades privacy IMO
It is concerning to hear about your student's package arriving opened, as Ohio State University (OSU) prioritizes student privacy and does not permit dorm or front desk staff to open personal packages. According to university policies, any inspection of packages would require a permit from the senior executive director of university housing, and staff are only responsible for logging packages and notifying students upon arrival.
Privacy Protections
OSU adheres to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which protects student records and personal information from unauthorized disclosure. This means that unless there is a clear safety concern, packages should remain sealed and uninspected.
Reported Experiences
While specific instances of staff opening packages are rare, students have expressed concerns about privacy, especially regarding sensitive items. Generally, packages are handled without inspection unless they contain prohibited items or hazardous materials, which would be returned to the sender rather than opened by staff.
If you suspect tampering, consider reporting the incident to the university's privacy team at security@osu.edu or reviewing the Residential Living Handbook for further guidance.
