My student is a first-year ECE major at Ohio State and is looking for practical ways to get early experience this year. They have solid programming experience (three languages), personal projects, and some prior work experience, and they’re already involved in major-related clubs. They’re not a fan of LinkedIn and feel like they’re missing opportunities others are finding.
To enhance their early experience as a first-year ECE major, your student should consider engaging in various structured opportunities available at Ohio State University.
High-Impact Technical Competitions Participating in events like the MakeOHI/O Hackathon on March 7–8, 2026, will allow them to leverage their programming skills in a collaborative environment. Additionally, they can contribute to ECE Outreach Projects, developing hands-on projects to teach K-12 students about engineering.
Early Undergraduate Research Your student can explore research roles by contacting faculty advisors directly or applying for the Freshman Research Initiatives. The FYRE program specifically targets first-year students for research in programming education, and they may also consider applying for Summer Research Scholarships ranging from $3,500 to $5,000 for their first summer research experience.
Networking and Career Events Encourage them to attend Intern Week 2026 (January 20–23) and the Engineering Winter Career Fair on January 26-27, 2026, to connect with potential employers. The Spring Into Your Career Fair on March 31, 2026, is also a great opportunity for immediate hiring.
Student Project Teams Since they are already involved in major-related clubs, they should consider joining specialized teams like Buckeye Solar Racing, Buckeye Current, or the Buckeye Space Launch Initiative to work on innovative projects.
Where to Find Opportunities Utilize Handshake for job postings and career fair registrations, and check the Engineering Career Services for workshops and advising sessions. The ECE Department Research Page can help identify faculty members whose work aligns with their interests.
