Is there an honors track offered. Our 2nd grader has been saying math is boring and too easy lol. Any insight would be appreciated
If your 2nd grader finds math boring and too easy, the school provides an alternative through the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program rather than a formal honors track.
GATE Program Overview
- The GATE program supports high-achieving students by placing them in cluster classrooms where they receive differentiated instruction tailored to their abilities.
- While specific honors math classes begin in middle school (Grade 7), GATE students in elementary school are provided with math instruction that accommodates their proficiency levels, fostering higher-level thinking and engagement.
To enroll in the GATE program, your child must undergo an identification process:
- Testing Window: Universal testing for first-graders typically occurs in the winter, with GATE testing scheduled between January and March for the 2026 school year.
- Assessment Measures: The district uses various assessments, including the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT3) and teacher inventories, to identify eligible students.
- Notification: Families are notified of placement decisions before summer break.
For more information, consider contacting the school principal or your childβs teacher to discuss your child's needs and potential assessment opportunities. You can also visit the HBCSD GATE webpage for detailed information on the program and enrollment procedures.
