How does college counseling work? Do students have to set up appts, or will the school do it automatically for them?
College counseling at Harvard-Westlake is designed to support students through a structured yet personalized approach. Each student is assigned a dean at the beginning of their sophomore year, who serves as their primary academic and college counselor for the next three years.
Appointment Scheduling Students are expected to take the initiative in scheduling their own appointments with their deans. However, the school incorporates mandatory meetings to ensure students stay on track:
- Junior Year Kickoff: Students must schedule their first formal college counseling session during the second semester of their junior year.
- Dean Cohort Meetings: Juniors participate in cohort meetings once per academic cycle, focusing on research and list-building workshops.
- Family Meeting: A formal meeting involving the student, parents, and dean is required in the spring of junior year to align on college goals and lists.
