My kid is an athlete and spring travel plus academics seems like a route to burnout. For CdM sports, how do students realistically keep up when they miss class for games? Is there a standard teacher communication approach that works, and do coaches coordinate at all, or is it fully on the student?
Balancing athletics and academics can be challenging for student-athletes at Corona del Mar High School (CdMHS), but effective strategies are in place to help them succeed.
Student Responsibility Student-athletes are primarily responsible for notifying their teachers about upcoming absences due to games. It is crucial for them to pre-arrange make-up work for any missed assignments, quizzes, or tests. Establishing early communication with teachers at the start of the season is vital for managing coursework effectively.
Teacher Communication While students initiate communication, teachers are informed of upcoming absences and work collaboratively to support academic progress. Parents must notify the Attendance Office within 72 hours of an absence to ensure it is marked as excused, preventing potential academic penalties. Students excused early for games must obtain a pass from the Attendance Office and are responsible for all missed class assignments and notes.
Coach Coordination Coaches receive daily attendance reports to monitor athletes' class attendance before practices or games. The Athletic Department strives to schedule events that minimize conflicts with academic obligations, recognizing the importance of maintaining academic eligibility, which requires a minimum GPA of 2.0 with no more than one failing grade. Athletes are expected to communicate any tardiness or absences to their coaches, reinforcing personal responsibility.
